Crocheted Baby Monkey Hat
I’ve been crocheting baby hats this week for Stitches From The Heart. Making items for babies is a great way to use up yarn scraps and it makes me feel good to know that my bits and scraps of yarn are keeping a pre-mature baby warm and cozy.

I’m friends with many of the volunteers at Stitches From The Heart. SFTH is not only a wonderful yarn shop on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica, but it’s a worthwhile charity too. Here’s a description of the foundation from their website:

Stitches From the Heart was started after president and founder, Kathy Silverton, read an article about pre-mature babies going home from hospitals with very little, if anything at all. Anytime she had a few minutes she knitted booties, blankets, and hats for the needy babies. Her friends noticed and soon they were involved as well. At knit stores, she told other knitters and crocheters about her project and the idea began to snowball. When an article was published in a local newspaper, she was amazed when over a hundred women contacted her wanting to help knit and crochet for the children. Soon after, Stitches From the Heart was born. Stitches From the Heart has just celebrated its Fourth Anniversary. They have over 1400 volunteers hand knitting and crocheting hats, booties, blankets, and sweaters for newborn and pre-mature babies.

My Baby Monkey Hat (above) was inspired by Carmen Watkins’ “Li’l Monkey Baby Hat and Matching Afghan” from the Stitch ‘n Bitch crochet book, “The Happy Hooker.” Instead of just making a one-dimensional monkey appliqué, I created a monkey head for a hat. The olive green and rust-colored hats are hexagonal grannies, enlarged to make hats. The little yellow, red and green flower derby is a variation of my Baby Derby pattern in crochetme.com.

So, if you have some leftover yarn scraps, it would be therapeutic for you and for the babies to whip up some hats! Drop by the Stitches From The Heart shop anytime for inspiration. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day celebration!

:) I'm going there this weekend - they finally got my yarn in!!!

That monkey hat is THA BOMB. I gotta learn how to crochet. There's no way I could get that same effect by knitting, huh?

BTW, is that a tail on the back of the monkey's head?

Oh Monkey Girl....you could probably get a similar look by knitting a monkey hat, but you'd have to use thicker yarn so the ears would stand up. No, there isn't a tail on the back of the hat, but that's a great idea! I'll add one!!!
